Cynthia Hand - Nezemiskoji (Nezemiskoji #1)

Cynthia Hand - Nezemiskoji (Nezemiskoji #1)

5⭐

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Contemporary Romance, Books Series, Supernatural

Original Title: Unearthly

Original Language: English

Translated by: Aurelija Kuzbariene

Pages: 400

Format: Paperback

Publisher: Alma Littera

Date Published: 1st June 2012

Book Blurb:

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees...
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

My Review:

Ok, so the Unearthly book series were my favourite when I was a teen… In 2013 I was obsessed with this book and I probably read it like 10 times if not more. So, I thought it was time to put my nostalgic cap on and re-read it again, just to see if after nearly 10 years I still like it as much as I did before. Honestly speaking, I did like it a lot, maybe not as much as I used before, but for me, it is still a solid 5-star book and one of the best paranormal/fantasy YA series about angels and demons.

In this first book, we meet Clara, who recently learned from her mother that she is a part angel. Her angel blood allows her to have special powers, but at the same time as an angel, she has a purpose, a task, that she needs to complete. However, figuring out what that task is, is not easy. There are no instructions or manuals on how to be an angel. Thus, Clara must figure it out herself, whilst seeing visions of a mysterious guy in a forest fire. This leads her to a small town where she meets a guy from her vision. Yet, it's not as simple as it seems, Clara will have to face dangers, lies, drama, and deceit in order to figure out her own purpose and task, and how the mysterious guy is related to all of it.

I loved how easy to read this book was. I also loved that the romance part of the book isn’t presented until more than halfway through the book, which allows readers to get to know Clara, her powers and her family better. I felt that the main characters of this book were very well presented and developed from the get-go of this book. I really liked Clara, as although, she is smarter and stronger than everyone else, she also doesn’t shy from her flaws and is very humble. Additionally, I liked the mystery effect of not telling the readers much about the angels and their purpose on Earth at the start of the book, but slowly revealing crumbs and bits of information throughout the book.

Overall: Still one of my favourite books/series from my teen years, and I can’t wait to reread the other two books in this series. It was such a nostalgic read.

Format: Paperback Proof

Huge thank you to Orenda Books for sending me an ARC copy of this book to read and review.

Book Blurb:

A young woman starts experiencing terrifying premonitions of people dying, as it becomes clear that a family curse known only as The Murmurs has begun, and a long-forgotten crime is about to be unearthed...

On the first morning of her new job at Heartfield House, a care home for the elderly, Annie Jackson wakens from a terrifying dream. And when she arrives at the home, she knows that the first old man she meets is going to die.

How she knows this is a terrifying mystery, but it is the start of horrifying premonitions ... a rekindling of the curse that has trickled through generations of women in her family – a wicked gift known only as 'the murmurs'...

With its reappearance comes an old, forgotten fear that is about to grip Annie Jackson.

And this time, it will never let go...

A compulsive gothic thriller and a spellbinding supernatural mystery about secrets and small communities, about faith, courage and self-preservation, The Murmurs is a startling and compulsive read from one of Scotland's finest authors.

My Review:
I read the blurb of this book and I knew that I needed to read it. It just sounded so good…and I wasn’t wrong. This book is brilliant! I loved this with all my heart and didn’t want to finish it so quickly, but at the same time, I also wanted to know the ending.

Annie starts a job at a care home, yet her first day doesn’t go well. One of the elderly patients that she is supposed to care for suddenly dies. Annie however sees a premonition about his death and knows how the patient is going to die precisely, via the murmurs, a curse that is passed through the generation of the females in the family. She doesn’t know about The Murmurs, and she doesn’t know why she is the only one hearing them. These chilling murmurs make Annie and her twin brother look for answers, which leads them to numerous secrets about their family, the mysterious Scottish Highlands, unsolved murder cases, and witchcraft.

I loved how this book follows then and now timelines and chapters that are told from various characters' POVs. Also, I loved that in each chapter there is a crumb of information and a reader has to collect them all to puzzle a story. I think this just added more to the suspense and thrill of this book. The setting of this book in the remote Scottish Highlands was just brilliant, as it captures that truly gothic and mysterious atmosphere of lochs, mountains and small villages hidden in them. I also adored how the author managed to link the mystery and gothic atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands so naturally with curses, and witchcraft, as well as the present-day environment/society.

I just knew from a few chapters that this book is going to be amazing. The atmosphere, scene setting, suspense and writing were all so good. It was also an emotional story because both Annie and her brother are searching for the truth about The Murmurs, but alongside that learn quite a lot about their own family. I must mention how all the characters in this book are very well-developed and each of them makes the story whole and are important in one way or another to the story.

Overall: This was my first book from Michael J. Malone but definitely won’t be the last. Beautifully written, with short yet captivating chapters full of suspense and tension. Mysterious and gothic atmosphere, family secrets, and paranormal murmurs all mixed in a perfect book. One of my favourite gothic thrillers that I have ever read.

Book Blurb:

The regulars at Café Funiculi Funicula are well acquainted with the whimsical ability it grants them to take a trip into the past—as well as the strict rules involved, including that each traveller must return to the present in the time it takes for their coffee to get cold. In Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s previous novels, patrons have been reunited with old flames, made amends with estranged family and visited loved ones. Now readers will once again be introduced to a new set of visitors.

The Husband with Something Important Left to Say

The Woman Who Couldn’t Bid Her Dog Farewell

The Woman Who Couldn’t Answer a Proposal

The Daughter Who Drove Her Father Away

In Last Chance to Say Goodbye, which is translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot and features signature heartwarming characters and wistful storytelling, Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: What would you change if you could travel back in time?

My Review:

I adored Before the Coffee Gets Cold Series, as well as I love Japanese literature, and this book is no exception. It was so amazing to come back to the Funiculi Funicula café and reunite with the café’s owners, and its regulars, yet at the same time immerse myself in new stories about people who chose to travel back in time for various reasons.

In this book, there are four more stories of people who decided they want to travel back in time. We met a husband who wanted to tell something very important to his wife who is in a coma. We also met a woman who wanted to say goodbye to her dog but didn’t have a chance before. There was also a story about a girl who couldn’t say yes to her boyfriend’s proposal until it was too late and we learn about a daughter who regretted pushing her father away and wants to set wrongs to rights.

I didn’t think all the stories were as strong as in the first three books, but I particularly enjoyed the one about the girl wanting to meet her father and say what she actually felt before she pushed him away. It was such a great story that linked to a significant event from a recent Japanese history and was perfectly intertwined with the main point of the café – to say what you want to say but didn’t have a chance before it is too late.

Overall: I really enjoyed being back with the characters that I grew to love over the last three books and the stories themselves were unique, different to one another and very heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. I just wish there were more than four stories in each of the books as I love the style of writing, the mystical realism and how well the main characters are developed throughout this book. Truly recommend!

Pages: 298

Big thanks to Alice James for sending me an e-copy of this book to read and review.

Book Blurb:

Agatha Raisin meets Sookie Stackhouse, with love, heartbreak and zombies.

More murder. More mayhem. More champagne.

Toni Windsor is failing at ‘happily ever after,’ but it really isn't her fault.

All she wants is true love and the perfect wardrobe, but it doesn't look like they are coming her way any time soon. Instead, there are murders to solve and zombies to raise, and she’s broken her phone again.

Worst of all, her shiny new boyfriend turns out to be a jerk; maybe dating a vampire wasn’t her best decision ever?

My Review:

This book is even funnier and quirkier than the first one. It is also even more sarcastic and witty than the first one. Oh, and it has even more sexy vampires. What’s not to like? James’s writing is brilliant! A perfect blend of witty, crazy and humorous tones mixed with seriousness and complexity. All this makes each of the characters, especially Toni, not only fun but also portrays how complex each of them are. Basically, I am trying to say that life is complex and James writes her characters with a perfect balance of seriousness, crazy and funny.

In the book, we follow Toni, who is asked to assist her brother in yet another murder case. There are several suspects, but no one knows who did it, not even zombie Bella after Toni raises her from the dead. On top of that, Toni has to deal with her boyfriend Oscar, who, let’s say, is getting on her nerves and pressuring her to do things she doesn’t want. She also is pushed around by Benedict, who she has to run errands for. Oh, and Toni also has to deal with the forever-growing line of people that wants to kill her…The girl can’t seem to catch a break…

This book felt both, a murder mystery and Toni trying to find her way, as well as make sense of her newfound life with vampires at such proximity. She is not only asked to find out who Bella’s murderer is but also needs to sort out her own (messy) love life and keep herself safe from vampires and other creatures that are trying to kill her, whilst also juggling whatever the Assemblage tells her to take care of.

I loved how Toni grew as a character throughout the first two books, especially in this book. I just love her attitude and her outlook on life. I feel I could learn a thing or two from her, yet at the same time, she feels like a familiar character to whom I can relate.

I love how the story is progressing too. There are still so many questions unanswered, but this book built such a great foundation for all of those to be answered in the next instalments.

I am just going to go and cry about how frustrating Peter’s situation is… and laugh about Oscar…if you know, you know…#TeamPeter

Overall: Brilliantly written story, with so many great characters that I fell in love in the first instalment and don’t want to let go. Like I need the third book now! The suspense! Why did the book have to finish on such a cliffhanger!!! Honestly, can’t wait to see what crazy situations Toni will get herself into in book three.

Book Blurb:

From Susan Dennard, the New York Times bestselling author of the Witchlands series, comes a haunting and high-octane contemporary fantasy about the magic it takes to face your fears in a nightmare-filled forest and the mettle required to face the secrets hiding in the dark corners of your own family.

Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.

Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.

Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family's good name. Or die trying.

But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.

Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark.

My Review:

I am slowly getting myself back into YA Fantasy and Fantasy in general, and reading The Luminaries displayed why I want to go back into reading more fantasy. This book for me was really enjoyable. I loved the setting of Hemlock Falls, enjoyed the history and explanations about each clan and its nightmares, and I liked the characters, too. Yes, this book felt a bit slow at times and there wasn’t a lot of action, but it presented a perfect foundation for the series and storylines to be expanded over the next instalments. I also really enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end of this book, which made me feel super excited for the second instalment.

The story follows Winnie Wednesday who grew up in Hemlock Falls, a magical town surrounded by a dangerous forest, where the nightmares and the spirits that create them, live. All the different clans in town train to be hunters that hunt nightmares every night and Winnie’s biggest dream is to become one of the hunters. Though, for Winnie to become a hunter will be much harder than for others in town. She and her family are the outcasts, due to her father’s betrayal of the Wednesday clan more than four years ago. Winnie comes up with a plan on her 16th Birthday, she will attempt the hunter trial, not only to become a hunter but also to prove her loyalty and make sure that her family are no longer outcasted.  However, she soon realises that there is something really dangerous lurking in the forest that might not only affect her hunter's trial but could be potentially very dangerous for everyone at Hemlock Falls.

Firstly, I loved the setting of the forest and the world-building that Dennard did in this book, especially how she weaved so many mythological and paranormal creatures together as inhabitants of one mystical forest.

Secondly, this book was so easy to read and as I was so invested in Winnies stories, I just flew through the short chapters. And I also wanted to know more about the mysterious Jay and some other characters more, hence I couldn’t put this book down.

Finally, the book finished on such a cliffhanger and some really important questions weren’t answered in this book (which hopefully will be answered in the next instalments). I still feel there is so much unknown about the Dianas, Winnie’s father and the town itself (as in why they don’t speak to the outside world about The Luminaries or the forest).

My only negative thing was that there were romantic feelings and loads of tension between the two main characters but nothing has been done to address it…I wish that romance was explored a bit more in-depth.

Overall: A very promising and exciting story, that reads very quickly with characters and a plotline that captures the reader and doesn’t want to let go. Honestly, enjoyed this book so much and can’t wait for the sequel.

Book Blurb:

An unusual girl. An enigmatic man. An ancient castle. What could go wrong?

An outcast her entire life, Corvina Clemm is left adrift after losing her mother. When she receives the admission letter from the mysterious University of Verenmore, she accepts it as a sign from the universe. The last thing she expects though is an olden, secluded castle on top of a mountain riddled with secrets, deceit, and death.

An enigma his entire life, Vad Deverell likes being a closed book but knowing exactly everything that happens in the university. A part-time professor working on his thesis, Vad has been around long enough to know the dangers the castle possesses.
And he knows the moment his paths cross with Corvina, she's dangerous to everything that he is.

They shouldn't have caught each other's eye. They cannot be. But a chill-inducing century-old mystery forces them to collide. People have disappeared every five years for over a hundred years, and Corvina is getting clues to unravelling it all, and Vad needs to keep an eye on her.

And so begins a tale of the mystique, the morbid, the macabre, and a deep love that blossoms in the unlikeliest of places.

My Review:

I loved the atmosphere this book has, so creepy, gothic, mysterious, supernatural and suspenseful. The dark academia vibes in this book were spot on too! I was definitely obsessed with the Verenmore mystery and the Slayers. I loved the writing and the setting of this story, as well as the character development, especially Corvina’s throughout the book. However, the only love-hate relationship that I have with this story was Corvina’s and Vad’s relationship and at parts smut that was just too cringe.

The story follows Corvina who is invited to attend Verenmore University for gifted students from unfortunate backgrounds. At Verenmore, she soon meets the very mysterious, attractive bad boy Professor Vad Deverell and can’t seem to get away from him. Vad also seems to be very attracted to her. However, Corvina tries to be careful around him, not only because of his reputation as a Casanova with the female students but also because she believes there is something evil about him and that he might be responsible for all the mysterious and unexplainable things that are happening at Verenmore.

I loved the gothic atmosphere, dark academic vibes and mystery of the story, especially the forbidden woods, scary lake and cemetery, castle tower, as well as dungeons. The whole Verenmore and the surrounding mountain felt like one big secret and it was a rather exciting one! I also loved how the mysteries surrounding Verenmore, were answered one by one and quite slowly. At times it also felt that we as readers learn everything at the same pace as Corvina, and the reader is there with her to experience it all.

I really liked how much Corvina grew as a character throughout the book. At first, she was so shy and reserved, and also doubted herself so much, but Verenmore and uncovering all its secrets made her so confident, strong and determined. I think she is definitely one of my favourite characters.

In terms of Vad, I wished there was more of his POV in this book. Maybe then I would have warmed up to him and would have understood the relationship and attraction between him and Corvina. For me, he still ended up just as mysterious at the end of the book as he was at the beginning.

Also, there was a lot of smut and spice, like a lot! I mean I enjoyed most of it, but in parts, I wanted less of it, as it was getting rather cringy. I was also very conflicted about the relationship between Corvina and Vad Deverell, in part I loved it but in part I hated it…So I ended up having a love-hate relationship with those parts of the book.

The ending….I wanted more…I felt that there were so many things that this book didn’t answer yet. Yes, most of the mysteries were solved in this story but there were so many that weren’t. So, I do hope it is because there will be a second book (fingers crossed), as I need to know the answers and need more mystery of Verenmore in my life!

Overall: Despite the love-hate relationship that I have about the relationship of the main characters in this book, I loved it! I loved the gothic, dark and mysterious atmosphere. I was also obsessed with dark academia vibes and Verenmore in general! The mystery too!! Run, don’t walk and get a copy yourself! I will be definitely looking out for more books by RuNyx in the future!

Book Blurb:

When Diya Burman’s best friend dies, her life falls apart. She loses everything.

But then she gets a new job: working at Slough & Sons, cleaning up after the recently deceased.

Clearing away the remains of lost lives, Diya begins to see things. Horrible things, that can’t be written off as imagination. Nothing is as it seems with the Sloughs.

It’s a dirty business, cleaning up after the dead, and if Diya’s not careful she might end up getting buried under the family tree.

My Review:

This book is so well written and also captivating. I didn’t want to put it down until the very end when I finally found out what is going on. Even then I was so surprised and even had that I didn’t see that coming moment after finishing this book. Another perfect and at times quite spooky and creepy book for the Autumn TBR.

The story follows Diya, who recently lost her best friend and grief is taking over her life. She losses her job, her relationship with her family is suffering and she distanced herself from all of her friends. Mainly because it seems to her that no one understands what she is going through and also because everyone is saying to her just to move on with her life. If she moves on, however, she is afraid her friend’s memory is going to fade, and Diya can’t let that happen.

A family-run cleaning business, Slough & Sons offers Diya a very well-paid job. However, it isn’t your average cleaning job, it requires you to clean up after the deceased. Diya agrees to take a job in hope that it will give some sort of closure about her friend’s death and will make her grief easier, especially seeing that other people are going through a similar thing. As the days in the new job progress, Diya starts to feel strange things are happening in jobs that the Sloughs family are asked to do. She starts seeing visions of people’s last moments, which shows that they haven’t died on their own. They all have been somehow murdered and any traces of their identities are destroyed. Diya’s suspicions grow even higher when no one in the Slough family wants to talk about their recently deceased brother who Diya replaced in the business. Now Diya needs to find out what is happening with all the supposedly murdered people, whilst also not getting tangled in Slough’s family’s mess.

I really enjoyed this book, especially Diya’s character. Throughout the book, she goes through so much, firstly losing her best friend, then starting to have visions, and then finally having to uncover what Sloughs are up to with their cleaning business. She is such a likeable character that a reader can easily relate to her. She goes through so many emotions and I liked how this book explored grief and losing someone through her and through the Slough’s business. The Slough’s cleaning business portrayed how easily we can forget the deceased, whilst Diya showed that it is so important for their memory to live on in us. For me definitely, this book was more than just a horror story but also had that additional layer of important takeaway messages about loss, grief and death.

The only downside for me in this book is that it was a really slow burn and the ending just happened very suddenly. Although I enjoyed the ending, I wished that some parts of the book were paced a bit quicker.

Overall: It is a very well-written book that was so easy to read. It connects the reader to the characters and messages it conveys with such ease, too. I also liked the suspense in this book that keeps a reader engaged until the very end. It is a very interesting and rather unique storyline with so many important and relevant topics discussed in this book as well. I truly recommend it and I will be definitely reading more from Jonathan Sims.

A daughter who couldn’t say ‘You’re an idiot.’
A comedian who couldn’t ask ‘Are you happy?’
A younger sister who couldn’t say ‘Sorry.’
A young man who couldn’t say ‘I like you.’

With his signature heart-warming characters and immersive storytelling, in Before Your Memory Fades, Toshikazu Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

My Review:

OMG! The third book of the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series is even better than the last two. This usually doesn’t happen in the world of book series for me. However, I take that as an amazing thing. I love this series. It has everything that I love, it is set in Japan, it has mystical realism, it talks and discusses important subjects and the writing with translation are just superb.

This third instalment is slightly different from the first two, because the scene moves to rural northern Japan, to a Hakodate port by the hillside of the Mount. Hakodate. Nagare and Kazu, owners of the café in Tokyo are asked by the owner of Hakodate’s café to look after it, whilst she is away. Nagare and Kazu agree thus we meet a completely different group of customers who want to travel to the past or the future in this café. This café in Hakodate also has the same magical chair that can help you time travel. The rules are also the same.

In this book, we meet a daughter who wants to travel to see her dead parents and tell them how much she hates them. We also meet a successful comedian who wants to share his success with his wife who passed away and who he misses dearly. Additionally, we get to know a local boy who wants to travel into the past upon realizing that the girl who was by his side from a young age is the one for him, as well as, we get to read the story of two sisters, one of them passed away and the other is consumed with grief and need to hear from her deceased sister that it is alright to be happy.

I liked how much this book interlinked with the first two, as this made the move to another location so much more natural. I also really liked the change in scenery, as I think changing the location of the café made the stories of the customers fresher.

I felt that this book was concentrating more on grief, loss, and losing loved ones in comparison to the two previous books. I honestly, really liked this, as it explored different characters and how they all deal with loss and grief in their separate ways. It makes the book realistic and relatable. The only thing I hoped that this book would do, which it sadly didn’t explore, was the origin story of the ghost that sits in the time travel chair in this café in Hakodate.

The ending of this book was so heart-wrenching and I honestly shed a tear or two, as it was that beautiful and sad at the same time. It made me think about life and loss, whilst also remembering and cherishing all the good memories and moment that comes my way.

Overall: Another perfect read for windy autumn weather, whilst enjoying a frothy cup of coffee under a fluffy blanket. Such a lovely book, which has so much food for thought and so many lessons about life, loss, and grief. Loved it and hope that there will be more instalments of this series in the future as I will be keeping my eyes peeled for that.

Big thanks to Rebellion Publishing for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.

Book Blurb:

Agatha Raisin meets Sookie Stackhouse, with croquet and zombies. Toni Windsor is trying to live a quiet life in the green and pleasant county of Staffordshire. She'd love to finally master the rules of croquet, acquire a decent boyfriend and make some commission as an estate agent.

All that might have to wait, though, because there are zombies rising from their graves, vampires sneaking out of their coffins, and a murder to solve.

And it's all made rather more complicated by the fact that she's the one raising all the zombies. Oh, and she's dating one of the vampires too. Really, what's a girl meant to do?

My Review:

This book was funny and quirky, with so many brilliantly entertaining characters. It was super hard to stop reading... A perfect book for the spooky season, as it has romance, vampires, zombies, and loads of spice….I mean who doesn’t love all that in one book? It transported me back to True Blood days…Also, I was so sad when I finished reading it because I was not emotionally prepared to say goodbye to the amazing array of characters and their sometimes rather daft adventures (in a funny and good way).

The story follows Lavington (Toni) Windsor who is a necromancer by night and a real estate agent by day. Yes, she raises the dead at night, whilst selling houses by the day. Exciting, right? That’s until she meets a very extravagant vampire Oscar who not only catches her interest but her heart too. However, knowing and loving a vampire brings Toni quite a lot of trouble and many situations that end up with loads of dead vampires…Also, it puts Toni’s life in danger more often than she would like, as well as, so many people are suddenly after her that she is kind of wishing her old quiet life back…

This book made me laugh out loud so much, but also, I was disgusted by vampire heads that were ripped off by zombies, cringed at some of the spicy scenes, and cheered Toni on when she was witty and mean to some of the big vampire ‘bosses’. Haven’t read such an entertaining and funny book in a while!

I loved Toni. She is interesting, sometimes odd, but has such a good wit and English humour that I just adored. She is also brave, stands up for herself, and doesn’t take a no for an answer. I think the humour, the wit, and the ability to make even the horrible situations that she gets herself into quite hilarious, make this book so good.

Oh, and let’s just appreciate how amazing and sweet Peter is in this book. He needs all the love from everyone…True star and hero of this story. #TeamPeter

I only wished there was more of Oscar. I felt Toni’s connection with Peter but I felt that her connection with Oscar was lacking quite a bit. It looked like Toni and Peter were a couple in this book rather than Toni and Oscar. Also, because there was so little of Oscar in this book, I felt that it was quite hard to judge his character, so hopefully, the next installment of the series will have more on him.

Overall: It is such an entertaining, fresh, funny, and witty read, featuring a cast of amazing vampires, a necromancer, zombies, some humans, and loads of silly situations, spicy times, and humour. Really recommend this book, especially if you want something entertaining but perfect for this upcoming spooky season…Or if like me you once loved True Blood…or Vampires…A perfect book to sink your teeth into if you love vampires and everything supernatural - funny, entertaining, spooky and so (very) steamy. A brilliant debut by Alice James!Honestly, I can’t wait now for the next installment in this series as I am definitely sinking my teeth into that…

About the Author:

Alice lives in a converted chapel in Oxfordshire, England, with three cats and many house plants. She works as a writer, specialising in finance and travel. She was previously a journalist and TV presenter for Bloomberg before becoming press and PR director of a $1 billion US hedge fund for 18 months. That turned out to be the worst period in history for hedge funds, so she retired wounded. Alice has a degree in Maths from Bristol University – and half of a diploma in silversmithing from UCE University because it turns out that making the ladies’ version of the One Ring is a lot harder than she thought.

Alice’s first novel, Grave Secrets, is a whodunit with zombies, vampires, romance and croquet and you should definitely read it. Today.
